The training in hydraulics and pneumatics is part of a long-standing cooperation between Fintos and Wärtsilä. In recent years, Fintos has conducted several basic and specialised training courses for Wärtsilä’s R&D staff, including both theoretical and practical training.
Wärtsilä Marine’s Hannu Saari, Manager Plant & Cell Development, and Ville Halmesmäki, CTO and Trainer at Fintos, work together to design the training courses to optimally serve the customer’s needs.
– Together with Fintos, we have customised basic and advanced training courses suitable for our team and the engine installation team. The programme has included basic hydraulics training as well as high-pressure hydraulics and safety training. Next up are advanced courses on troubleshooting, component selection and suitability assessment, and equipment construction. We are also planning a course for installers, focusing on seals and installation adhesives according to installation specifications, says Hannu Saari from Wärtsilä.
Training is planned in cooperation between the client and the trainer
The preparation, content planning and delivery of the training have always gone as agreed. The main lines of content are agreed together in advance, and Fintos’ strong expertise in hydraulics, pneumatics and high-pressure hydraulics is reflected in the final content.
– We have gone through the safety and fundamentals of hydraulics and pneumatics in the training sessions. We have looked for examples from production and life in general. I feel that we have brought some insight into the lectures and training, says Halmesmäki.

Ville Halmesmäki from Fintos is a good trainer, and his teaching style is very well suited to face-to-face training. Many of the examples are from our own work, and this keeps the interest throughout the training.

Trainer’s strong knowledge and a teaching style that is meaningful to the target group are key to successful training.

Confidence and safety through training
Customising training to the needs of the client ensures that the resources spent on training pay for themselves. The benefits for individuals, teams and the client company are significant and long-lasting.
– Our staff has gained knowledge, confidence and the right methods for working. This is an important basis for efficient and safe operations and their continuous improvement, says Saari.
– Along the way, I have come to realise that training is responsibility at its best. The company gets a more skilled workforce, and that goes straight down the line, says Halmesmäki.

Feedback helps in the development of training services
Wärtsilä has been satisfied with the hydraulic and pneumatic training provided by Fintos, and has received a perfect score of “A” from Saari.
– I highly recommend the hydraulic and pneumatic training courses provided by Fintos. I have organised training sessions for my team and the engine installation team, as well as for the customer service team, says Saari.
Customer feedback is an important tool for developing training services.
– Based on the suggestions for improvement we have received, we are currently preparing an educational component wall in our training room, with components that will allow us to better demonstrate examples, says Fintos’ Ville Halmesmäki.
The cooperation between Wärtsilä and Fintos in hydraulic and pneumatic training will continue, and new basic and advanced training courses will be planned and organised according to needs..
